Creating a Costume From and To

Revealing the Greatest NOT-Secret to creating an image! This article describes my way of creating a closet for a character. Every artist has their own, but the principles are often similar.

Step 1. Searching for references

Go to the internet in search of inspiration. Scour every nook and cranny of the information space and save everything you like in a separate folder. Later, choose the images that appealed to you most, or that are most compatible with your character.

Step 2. Choosing a style

At this point, you need to come up with a style for your garment. Will it be an evening suit or a sports dress? Something open or winter warm? Everything is limited by your imagination!

Step 3: Distributing textures

Open the images you chose earlier. Highlight the details that are most interesting to you. Decide for yourself how you want to place the textures on the style you selected earlier. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Who knows where your imagination may lead?

Step 4: Choosing a palette

Pick the colors for your costume. If the palette for your character is already defined, feel free to use it. Or look for something new and unusual.

Step 5: Render

Now it’s time for the final detailing. You’ve already chosen references, styles, colors, and you already know what each piece of clothing looks like. Show these details.

Step 6. Let’s go!

Design is not limited to the costume. You can use the same principle to design important items for your character: relics, artifacts, weapons, etc. Put all your inspiration into your work.
